I want to use TfL’s Underground map but delete the station names. Am I infringing copyright laws?
There have been numerous reproductions of the Underground Tube map, namely Simon Patterson’s ‘The Great Bear’ and Harry Beck’s 1933 ‘Musical Map’ as updated and featured in the Guardian, February 03 2006 under the title ‘Going Underground’ by Dorian Lynskey.
I know you can’t copyright colours or general names so how far can I go without being prosecuted? TfL have declined permission for my initial design for an internal communication as part of my company relocation. I have seen the tube map reworked in corporate literature elsewhere. Is it the fact that TfL will not get exposure through royalties since the idea I have is to be used for internal communications?
You might be; it depends on the medium you use for reproduction, purpose and on how you modify the original design. Commercial licensing works differently from licenses for educational or artistic purposes. The fact that other people have done it is irrelevant. Get legal advice or find other sources to use in your literature: Multimaps; Transport Direct; your own sketch?
